What Was Their Crime?
What was their crime?
Those infants who never woke,
To wails of hapless mothers.
What those men did wrong?
Who collapsed on march.
In sweltering sun, on unforgiving road.
What transgression engender,
Such cruelty of malicious magnitude,
An agony of starvation and thirst?
Do we pay for the folly of choosing incompetent, ignorant
Most ingrate of rulers?
Should millions perish bereft of hope,
Diseased to destitution, disease,
For vanity and ego of few?

their crime was poverty. Sad but true.
