I dislike sleep

And fight its grip

On heavy eyelids

With every breath

I take



I win a few battles

But lose the whole war

For my body balks

And Nature talks

Behind my back



I’m thinking I’m keeping

Sleep at bay

But I cannot prevail

Against the cosmic

Order of things
