You Look Like Someone I’d End Up Being Friends With
“Weren’t you once
in the music scene?” I say
“I was once,” she says
We’re sitting at the counter
of the Lafayette Diner
She’s wearing a pajama top
stained with chocolate milk
and I a once white t-shirt
with spots of egg yolk on it
The chocolate milk stain
looks still wet, but perhaps
I presume too much -
maybe it’s Yoo-hoo
We are fat and the waitress
takes our orders and says
“OK honey,” with a thick
Cantonese accent
I order chocolate milk
and she orders
fried eggs
and I just know
it’s the start of something
really big.
