The
Strawberry Festival
Vendors drive in from around the country,
cardboard flats heaped with ripe fruit.
A stand sells cups of hot melted chocolate
for dipping,
another, shortcake. Local honey, homemade
jam,
lemonade, and handicrafts: crocheted
potholders,
birdhouses made in somebody’s garage.
People gather in the spring air,
as dependable as the perennials that bloom
on the courthouse lawn, as the migratory
tug
that brings the waterfowl back to the
marshes.
