Any
Reasonable Offer
Alongside
the mountain road
The
ground is burnt,
Choked
with ash,
Stained
with the residue
Of
steel production,
Newly
built dwellings
Wink
from the kerbside,
Inviting
‘no obligation’ viewings,
Those
already sold
Grin
good-naturedly,
Hiding
blushes
Behind
hanging baskets.
The
traffic glides past
On
freshly laid tarmac,
Crossing
one roundabout
After
another,
Until
the houses run out
And
there are only weeds,
Trembling
in the breeze,
Obscuring
signs advertising
Development
opportunities,
Begging
for attention,
Willing
to consider
Any
reasonable offer.
